Culturally Responsive Therapy in the Face of Anti-Immigrant Policies

Training Overview:

This advanced clinical training addresses the psychological, relational, and systemic challenges faced by immigrant clients—particularly undocumented individuals and mixed-status families—amid increasingly restrictive immigration policies. Designed for licensed and pre-licensed MFTs, PCCs and CSWs (and students)  the session deepens clinical competency in providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and ethically sound services. The training includes current policy context, immigration-related trauma, therapist positionality, clinical dilemmas, phase-based treatment model, and advocacy strategies.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how immigration status and anti-immigrant policies impact the mental health of individuals, couples, and families.
  2. Apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed frameworks when working with immigrant clients.
  3. Observe a phase-based approach to clinical treatment for immigrants,      refugees, and asylum seekers.
  4. Identify legal, ethical, and clinical considerations in working with undocumented or mixed-status families.
  5. Integrate strategies for advocacy, collaboration, and clinician self-awareness into their practice.
